About Josef Bauer

Sustainably farmed / organic

Weingut Florian Bauer, nestled in the village of Feuersbrunn in Austria's Wagram region, has recently transitioned to its fifth generation under the stewardship of Florian Bauer. Building upon the legacy of his parents, Josef and Christine Bauer, Florian continues the family tradition of winemaking on the Hengstberg hill, where the family has cultivated vineyards for generations.

The winery spans 13 hectares and is known for its diverse grape varieties, including Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Roter Veltliner, Zweigelt, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Florian is steering the estate towards organic viticulture, with the winery undergoing the certification process that began with the 2020 vintage and is expected to be completed with the 2023 vintage.

Florian's approach to winemaking blends tradition with innovation. While maintaining classic fermentation methods in steel tanks, he is also experimenting with spontaneous fermentations in ceramic vessels and aging in both small and large wooden barrels. This fusion of techniques aims to enhance the expression of the region's terroir in the wines.

The winery's commitment to quality is evident in its recent accolades. The 2022 Grüner Veltliner Wagram DAC Feuersbrunn Ried Rosenberg received a 92-point rating from Falstaff, praised for its inviting aromas of yellow apple, apricot, and honey blossom, coupled with a creamy texture and fine acidity. Similarly, the 2023 vintage of the same wine garnered a score between 91 and 93 points, noted for its delicate herbal notes, yellow apple, and papaya flavors, balanced by fine acidity.

Under Florian's leadership, Weingut Florian Bauer continues to honor its rich heritage while embracing sustainable practices and innovative winemaking techniques, ensuring the production of high-quality wines that reflect the unique character of the Wagram region.
