About rocca maura
Sustainably farmed
Located in the historic village of Roquemaure, near the right bank of the Rhône River in southern France, Rocca Maura is a cooperative winery that has been crafting wines since 1922. The name "Rocca Maura" is a tribute to the medieval name of Roquemaure, meaning "Black Rock," reflecting both the strength of the local terroir and the winery’s deep connection to the region’s heritage.
Rocca Maura sits at the crossroads of Provençal and Languedoc influences, in the heart of the Côtes du Rhône appellation. The vineyards extend across sun-drenched terraces composed of clay-limestone soils, alluvial deposits, and the iconic galets roulés—rounded stones left by ancient glacial activity, which retain heat and promote ripening.
The climate is Mediterranean, characterized by hot, dry summers, cool nights, and the powerful mistral wind, which sweeps through the valley, keeping vines healthy and disease-free. This combination of sun, wind, and rocky soils creates ideal conditions for growing Rhône varietals such as Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault.
As a cooperative of over 200 small growers, Rocca Maura unites generations of local winegrowers under a shared commitment to sustainability, quality, and regional expression. The winery blends modern technology with time-honored techniques, producing wines that are authentic, accessible, and deeply reflective of their southern Rhône origins.
Whether it's a classic Côtes du Rhône red, a fresh and floral rosé, or a crisp white blend, Rocca Maura wines capture the warmth, flavor, and character of this iconic winegrowing region.
