About Sixpence
Sustainably farmed
The Sixpence wines from Opstal Estate in South Africa's Slanghoek Valley is a heartfelt tribute to the farm's rich heritage and the dedicated individuals who have shaped its legacy. Named after Daniel Smiles—affectionately known as "Sixpence"—a shepherd who tended the estate's flocks in the 1950s and 1960s, this collection honors the transition from pastoral lands to flourishing vineyards. As sheep gave way to vines, the areas once grazed became known as "Sixpence’s Vineyards," symbolizing a new chapter in Opstal's history.
Crafted predominantly from grapes grown on these historic plots, Sixpence wines are designed to be approachable, easy-drinking, and reflective of the estate's commitment to quality and community.
Sixpence Cabernet Sauvignon: A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon offering vibrant red berries, plum, and subtle dark fruit notes, culminating in a well-rounded finish. It's a versatile companion to dishes like pizza, braaivleis, or spaghetti Bolognese.
Sauvignon Blanc Semillon: A blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Sémillon, this wine showcases ripe tropical fruits with a vibrant acidity and a well-rounded finish. It's particularly enjoyable with pasta, chicken salad, or fresh seafood.
Sixpence Cinsault Rosé: Made from Cinsault grapes grown in sandy soils rich with river pebbles, this rosé offers bright red fruit aromas, notably cherry and strawberry. A touch of Colombard adds lively acidity, making it a delightful match for summer salads, sushi, or Mediterranean cuisine.
Beyond the wines themselves, the Sixpence range embodies Opstal's dedication to its community. With third-generation workers residing on the estate, these wines serve as a testament to the enduring relationships and shared history that define Opstal. Each bottle not only delivers a taste of the Slanghoek Valley's terroir but also tells a story of tradition, transformation, and tribute .
