About Greyfriars wines

SUSTAINABLY FARMED / Woman owned

Nestled on the sun-drenched, south-facing chalk slopes of the Hog’s Back in Puttenham, Greyfriars Vineyard produces a spectacular range of English sparkling and still wines. Located just outside Guildford, the estate is dedicated to crafting wines that serve as a direct reflection of the unique heritage, climate, and geology of the Surrey North Downs.

Originally established in 1989, Greyfriars was a pioneer in the English wine movement, becoming one of the first sites in the country to plant traditional Champagne varieties. In 2010, Mike and Hilary Wagstaff took the helm with a transformative vision. Over the last 15 years, they have expanded the estate to 40 acres and constructed a state-of-the-art winery, featuring a unique underground chalk cave cellar designed for perfect natural maturation.

The estate’s portfolio is built upon the classic trio of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, supplemented by boutique plots of Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Blanc. This diversity allows Greyfriars to experiment while maintaining a core focus on quality. The dedication of the viticulture and winemaking teams has earned the vineyard consistent critical acclaim and numerous awards in prestigious international competitions.

Greyfriars does not seek to simply replicate Champagne; instead, the goal is to create a distinct expression of the Surrey North Downs terroir. By blending modern winemaking technology with a deep respect for their unique soil conditions, the Wagstaff family continues to push boundaries through ongoing trials and experimental techniques.
