  About Kaltern

Sustainably farmed

Since 1900 Cantina Kaltern has been an ambassador for the wines produced at Lake Kaltern, especially the indigenous “Kalterersee”. The wines offer moments of relaxed, light heartedness and trigger the wanderlust to experience this unique region. The winery with its 684 members proprietors of 490 hectars gets deeply involved in the preservation of the local traditions, the rural culture and the land of Kaltern as a whole, land which has always been heritage of the locals.
Along with the tempering effects of the lake, the location in the heart of the Alto Adige wine growing area allows for the optimal collection of the sun's rays, which give the grapes an extra bit of warmth, color and aroma well into the autumn. In the evenings, the cooler air from the 2.000 m high summit of the Mendel Ridge, which rises directly behind the vineyards, sinks down to the hills below. This cools the vines after a warm day, builds fruit complexity, and helps retain the natural acidity in the grapes. These are the best conditions for expressive white wines and elegant reds.

The ultimate judge of a winery is in the quality of its entry-level wines. The Cantina Kaltern 2019 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio is precise, tonic, easy and extremely versatile. High-toned aromas of citrus, tangerine skin, passion fruit, wild sage and crushed limestone emerge with confidence. This is a beautifully perfumed and extremely precise expression of Pinot Grigio. Winemaking is easy in stainless steel, and some 250,000 bottles were released.

The 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Vial offers an immediate mineral note that pops bright from the bouquet and is followed by honey, pear and white peach. However, the beauty of the wine remains in the fact that you can so clearly recognize those dolomitic mineral nuances. Mountain herb and dried sage also make distant app

The 2019 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Vial reveals a luminous appearance and brilliant golden highlights. The bouquet opens quickly to reveal orchard fruit, quince and Golden Delicious apple. Beyond that lovey primary fruit, the wine also offers background tones of almond, turmeric spice and crushed limestone. Grapes are sourced from an east-facing site with loamy conglomerate soils with chalky gravel and porphyry sand. The is a lean-bodied wine, but there is enough power and natural heft to pair with shellfish or white meat. You get terrific value, and this 60,000-bottle release will hit the market in October 2020. I recommend this vintage if you’re looking for a special and well-priced, crisp white from Northern Italy.

With fun, contemporary packaging and a screw cap closure, the Cantina Kaltern 2019 K White is a value blend of 40% Pinot Bianco, 30% Chardonnay and 30% Sauvignon Blanc. The wine is quick on its feet with citrus, bitter almond, wild sage and crushed chalk or limestone. There is a pretty vein of acidity that keep it extra fresh and easy to drink. Serve it at aperitivo time with salty tortilla chips and fresh guacamole. Some 50,000 bottles were released.
