Label Development
Preparing Labels
Here is what is required on the back label:
1. All Mandatory information can be as small as 1 mm, and no larger than 2 mm.
2. Description on back label
Several sentences describing the wine and the estate or region, and a tasting note.
3. Grape varietals on either back or front labels:
Grape varietals need to be stated whenever possible. By law, if more than one grape is referred to in the description, then the percentages must be stated.
If grape varietals ARE STATED anywhere on the bottle, and there is more than one varietal, then one of the labels (usually the back) must list the grape varietals and their percentages. Percentages must add up to 100 with the largest varietal stated first. The grape varietals can be stated in two ways:
1.Separate and apart from other surrounding text. Percentages do NOT need to be on the front label if they are listed on the back.
2. Within the text of the description. If you choose to state it this way then you need to make the percentages and the varietals BOLD (NERETTO), and larger then the surrounding text.
Example:
This wine is a lovely example of Piemonte. Made from a blend of 75% Dolcetto and 25% Barbera grapes, it is soft, supple and round.
(Note: the grapes and percentages must also be larger text)
4. Alcohol Warning needed on the back label
The Alcohol Warning text size is minimum 1 mm and maximum 2 mm. Characters cannot exceed 25 characters to the inch.
5. Bar Code on back label
Barcode can be UPC or EAN. Bar code MUST NOT CHANGE FROM VINTAGE TO VINTAGE, and must not change at all, ever. The size must be big enough to be easily scanned. We do not need the barcode in order to apply for TTB approval, just the place where the bar code will be, with "Bar Code" written in the box.
6. We used to ask for the Siema website and logo needed on the back label but now prefer the QR Code to our Website. Here is one you can use or you can generate one as well:
Siema website: www.siemawines.com
7. Vintage:
Can be stated on front only, back only, or on both front or back
8. All other Mandatory Information:
Imported By: Siema, LLC, Springfield, VA
Brand Name

Type of Wine (i.e. Red or White or Rose)
Bottled By: Plant or Winery name etc.
