Six Hats
ORGANIC ESTATE / woman winemaker
Citrusdal Wines is based in the historic farming town that forms the heart of the Western Cape’s citrus growing industry. Wine has been produced at this co-operative cellar since 1957 and in 2007 the operation was re-structured under the guidance and new ownership of respected vintner Charles Back. The company is now a collaborative partnership including Back, leading UK wine marketer Mike Paul and a number of Fair Trade Certified farmers.
The incorporation of the Fair Trade Certified farmers has allowed a large number of farm workers from the local community to become partners in the business, as the funds generated through the Fair Trade Premiums go directly into the community through a series of development projects. These projects have included child care and junior schools, sport facilities, improved housing and adult education. The farm partners are in the surrounding areas of the Piekenierskloof and the Swartland. The workers from these prime vineyards are now seeing the benefit of the farms’ sought after terroir translated into real benefits on the ground.
The Six Hats brand drew inspiration from the many tasks, principles and responsibilities that are common to all stakeholders in the business and core to the Fair Trade model throughout the value chain. The illustrated hats on the distinctive label are designed to figuratively represent the values of partnership, change, potential, equity, dignity and sustainability. These are the real values that Citrusdal Wines sees as integral to the long term success of Fair Trade.
