About Tegernseerhof

SUSTAINABLY FARMED / woman owned

The Mittelbach family‘s Tegernseerhof, located in Unterloiben, justbelow Dürnstein, boasts a tradition dating back to the year 1002. The original facilities were built in 1176 by the Benedictine community of the Tegernsee Abbey. For centuries, the abbey was where the Bavarian monastery produced its wine. At the turn of the 19th century, it was acquired by the Austrian Empire and later, it went into private ownership. Franz Mittelbach and his wife, Mathilde, are the fifth generation of Tegernseerhof owners.

Since the 1970s, they have been continuously running the Tegernseerhof as a family business. Today, Martin Mittelbach, the son of Franz and Mathilde, is the current part of this history. The Tegernseerhof vineyards flourish on stone terraces whose verdant soil plays host to a rich variety of indigenous fauna. Among the best-known, excellent locations and wines are Bergdistel, Hoehereck and Loibenberg (for Grüner Veltliner) as well as Loibenberg, Steinertal and Kellerberg (for Riesling). Our Estate is a member of the exclusive association “Vinea Wachau”, therefore the vinification follows the strict regulations of the “Codex Wachau“.

A touch of white pepper surrounds the green pear peel hints on the nose. The palate comes in with balanced lightness that is juicy and fresh, helped along by gentle spritz. This is easy,
juicy, balanced and dry.

A glint of ripe apricot mingles with sage-like savoriness on the nose. The palate picks up this dual theme of fruit and spice and envelops it in juicy generosity with a lovely frame of zesty and pithy citrus. Despite the undoubted ripeness and generosity, there is a lovely touch of lightness and breeziness here that gives a most elegant finish. Drink 2025–2040.

The 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Bergdistel offers a clear, fresh and intense, bright and elegant aroma of white seed fruits and honeydew melon intertwined with a dense, really flinty aroma. Fresh and elegant on the palate, this full-bodied wine reveals good structure as well as finesse and finishes with finely bitter phenolic grip. Bottled with a screwcap and 13.5% alcohol. Tasted in October 2019.

Mittelbach’s 2018 Grüner Veltliner Ried Loibenberg Smaragd offers a delicate but ripe and intense, nicely concentrated ripe berry and mango aroma intermingled with very fine mineral, herbal and even flint-stone notes. Lush and round on the palate, this is a full-bodied, generous and juicy as well as fine and even filigreed Loibenberg with lingering salinity, tart phenolic grip and grapefruit flavors on the long and stimulating finish. This is a remarkably good Loibenberg from a very hot year. Bottled with a screwcap and 14% alcohol. Tasted in October 2019.

Lifted lemon and white blossom notes spell vivid, aromatic freshness on the nose. The palate then comes in with zesty intent on a slender, racy, exciting body that is all about capturing lemon vivaceousness. The finish is dry, mouthwatering and zesty.

The faintest, flinty hint of reduction clings to the zesty overtones on the ripe Mirabelle plum nose. The palate still also shows a creamy yeast note before expanding into fruity, fleshy, Mirabelle ripeness. Overtones of apricot lend an aromatic touch, while concentration makes up for freshness with its pithy mouthfeel. The finish is dry and lasting

Wonderfully zesty notes of ripe bergamot shimmer on the aromatic nose of ripe apricots. The palate is generous and concentrated, presenting fruity, juicy generosity, anchored in a central core of zestiness. This is streamlined but rich, linear but smooth, releasing wave upon wave of ripe, pure, aromatic fruit. Drink now–2040.
